After the rain intervened at Centurion during the 5th and final ODI between South Africa and India, and the Proteas set India a score in excess of 260 according to the D/L system, I had a feeling my prediction on Friday that they will win the last two games and also the series, was spot on.
I followed India's innings up till it was 98 for 7 wickets down and decided that it was time to head home, drop off my kids and as I drove home, I started writing my report on the final ODI in my head. Imagine my surprise when I got home to see Pathan reaching his 100 off less than 70 balls. Time and time again sport proves us all wrong. Sport is so unpredictable and even if we have all the experience in the world, we still experience days like today when the very sport we followed for the past 30+ years, ends up surprising us once again.
If Morkel did not get the wicket of Pathan shortly thereafter, for a great 105 off 70 balls, I am sure India would have taken the series. Instead, they lost out by 33 runs in the end. Way to close for comfort if you asked me, but I will take a win any way possible, especially after this entire summer ended in such a very close match-up between two of the very best teams in the world.
Well done in the end, Proteas. Now for the World Cup and I cannot wait, because if this is the kind of action we will be part of next month, it's sure to be one nail-biting 2011 Cricket World Cup.
