GOLF: Tiger shot steady first round of his 2011 campaign...

SAN DIEGO - Tiger Woods began his new season with no bogeys, no birdies on the par 5s, and no drama.

After a disastrous year on and off the golf course, Woods felt little stress Thursday in the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines. The former No. 1-ranked golfer - he has slipped to No. 3 in the world and can't improve on that this week - shot a 3-under 69 that left him 5 shots behind Sunghoon Kang.

"I'm happy with the way I played, absolutely," Woods said. "I could have been a lot better if I took care of the par 5s a little bit more, but obviously, I didn't do that."

Kang, a 24-year-old rookie, finished with back-to-back birdies on the North Course for an 8-under 64, giving him a 1-shot lead over fellow rookies Alex Prugh, and Rickie Fowler. Another rookie, Chris Kirk, was another shot back at 66.

Phil Mickelson shot 32 on the back nine for a 5-under 67 to match the best score on the tougher South Course, which hosted the 2008 U.S. Open that Woods won in a playoff. Also at 67 on the South was John Daly, whose last win came in 2004 at this tournament. He is the last player to win at Torrey Pines when Woods was in the field.

Tiger Woods conducted a Twitter exchange for about 40 minutes on Tuesday on his way to Torrey Pines ahead of his 2011 debut while golf rivals Lee Westwood and Ian Poulter tweeted some taunts.
Continuing a charm offensive that began with Woods joining the social networking medium last year, Woods made the Pittsburgh Steelers his Super Bowl pick over Green Bay and even poked fun at himself.
But he never answered the challenge of Poulter to post a photo of himself to prove it was indeed Woods who was issuing the messages nor commented on a tweet from world number one Westwood about fellow Englishman Poulter.

Neither Westwood nor Poulter will face Woods when the 14-time major champion tees off Thursday at the $5.8m Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines alongside fellow Americans Anthony Kim and Rocco Mediate.
Woods overcame a knee injury that would require surgery to defeat Mediate in an 18-hole playoff at Torrey Pines for the 2008 US Open title, but he has not won a major title since and has not won any event since his epic sex scandal erupted 14 months ago.

GOLF: Kaymer moves up to second in World Rankings...

Martin Kaymer from Germany has moved up into the second spot in the World Rankings after winning this past week-ends Abu Dhabi tournament with a comfortable 8 shots.

Kaymer's move meant that Tiger Woods moves down to number three in the rankings.

The German seems to be in the same devastating form as last year and with this scorching start to 2011 it seems there is no stopping this talented young golfer. Will he be the next number one golfer in the world? I think so yes...!

GOLF: Tiger opens 2011 campaign at San Diego...

With the first winless golf season of his professional career still fresh in his memory, Tiger Woods will launch his 2011 campaign in San Diego next week at one of his most successful venues.


Woods confirmed on Wednesday he will play his first tournament of the year in the PGA Tour's Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines where he has won the title a record six times.
"I'm really looking forward to competing," the 35-year-old American said on his website (http://web.tigerwoods). "I've been working hard on my game and I'm excited about 2011."


World No 2 Woods will be eager to make a fresh start next week after spending much of last year unsuccessfully trying to repair his marriage and also undergoing the fourth swing change of his career.
Having been engulfed by a sex scandal at the end of 2009, he finished the 2010 PGA Tour season without a single title for the first time since he turned professional in 1996.


He was also deposed as world No 1 by Britain's Lee Westwood on November 1, ending a reign of more than five years at the top.


However, since Woods joined forces with Canadian swing coach Sean Foley after the PGA Championship in August, his form has steadily improved.
