TMO's and Referees Get It Wrong Frequently - But Why?

Against Wales the Springboks were awarded a try after Fourie du Preez kicked the ball forward along the touchline with Jaque Fourie clearly ahead of the ball, but neither the referee nor the touch judge called them back, or asked for the TMO to review it. In this instance the touch judge was in a much better position and he should have made a call regarding this incident.

What is so ironic is the fact that a try like this, which is clearly not a legitimate try is awarded, but then you look closely at the two "tries" the Boks scored Saturday night against France and both are disallowed. What is wrong with these officials? I do agree that possible "try" number one where Steyn touched a high pass and Jean de Villiers scooped it up to send Jaque Fourie over the goal-line, was a 50/50 call and probably could have gone either way.

However, the Francois Louw "try" in the corner after a perfectly judged Willie le Roux grubber and a mistake by a French player was certainly the wrong call by the TMO. There is NO way that the French player placed any sort of controlled hand on the ball, or put any downward pressure on the ball, as is required according to the rugby laws. (Law 22.1 - Grounding the Ball

And these are only a few of the dubious calls our rugby officials make every Saturday!

With all the technology at their fingertips, they still get it wrong, and then they view about 10 replays at times, all from different angles as well! How is the IRB going to address these issues, because it is causing huge frustration to fans, coaches, and not to mention the players?

What is your suggestions? Or are we, the fans who pay good money to support our teams all year long, going to do or say nothing?

A Comparison: Ruan Pienaar vs All the Other SA Scrum-halves

vs the Rest...

With Fourie du Preez being released from the Springbok squad unexpectedly (As I am writing this article, I am not yet 100% sure why, but maybe somebody could shed some light on what happened?) and Ruan Pienaar being selected to start on Saturday night against the French, the debate regarding Pienaar as second choice no. 9 in the Bok team starts up once more!

Above, The Sports-Man has included the other possible Springbok no. 9 contenders, with Charl McLeod probably being too "old" to be in the running as the first choice scrum-half for the 2015 RWC. I want to start off by asking a few questions that come to mind when I see and hear how many fans criticize Ruan Pienaar:

1. Why does Heyneke Meyer keep him in the Bok team as his 'second best' scrum-half?
2. Why do almost everybody in the Europe rugby leagues, or Heineken Cup, and especially in Ireland where he has just recently agreed to another three year extension with his Ulster club, rate Pienaar as one of the best? (He said no to the top French club, Toulon, who was feverishly after him for the coming season!)
3. He has always been a highly-regarded all-round rugby talent, being able to play in various positions in the back-line, kick with both feet equally well, possess a solid pass, and he has always been able to read the game very well.

I would love to know the answers to the above questions from our die-hard Springbok fans out there? If there are fans that think that they know the "real" answers, then send them to us as soon as possible!

I know that Pianaar struggles on defence at times and his passing has been suspiciously slow of late, but surely these are issues that, if worked on by a quality coach like HM, should be sorted out in no time? What did Pienaar do to deserve this kind of harsh criticism and why do the fans from other rugby playing nations rate him higher than us South Africans?

Please give us your views on this issue and let us try to find some answers? The Sports-Man wishes to know what you think, so please leave your comments below...!

More International Rugby Results: November 16, 2013

The following international rugby games were played mainly around Europe and these were the results thus far:

WALES vs ARGENTINA

40 - 6 Hammering by the Welsh at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff - the score speaks for itself. The Pumas was never in the game and was utterly disappointing, while Wales made more than up for their loss last Saturday at the same venue against the Boks.

ITALY vs FIJI

37 - 31 Was the final score, but Fiji came back very strong towards the end to nearly spoil it for the Italians, who managed to hold on for a satisfying win after their huge loss against the Aussies seven days ago.

French Babarians vs Samoa

20 - 19:  Clermont's Marcel-Michelin stadium saw an entertaining and close encounter with many top names running out for the BaaBaas against a Samoa team who wanted to proof something after their loss the previous weekend against Ireland. Two tries by SA's Heini Adams and another try by Gerhard Vosloo made sure the BaaBaas scraped in for the win.

In more rugby news there was something for the Springbok fans to smile about with Morne Steyn and Willem Alberts declared fit to play on Sunday (tomorrow) against Scotland. Kickoff time at the famous Murrayfield is 17h00 local SA time.

Where and with who are you watching the unusual Sunday test match?

30 - 22: The All Blacks Remain Unbeaten in 2013

Another hard fought win for the All Blacks see them still unbeaten in 2013. The mighty number one team in world rugby had to fight hard in the last 20 minutes at Twickenham, where they were beaten a year ago by the same England.

It took the New Zealanders only 17 minutes to accomplish a lead of 14, with the score at 17-3. Although things came easy for them during the first 30 minutes of the game, England managed to claw their way back into the game valiantly and the teams went into the break with the All Blacks only 20-16 ahead.

The second half was a close affair with both teams fighting hard for possession and it was England that got their noses in front 22-20 with about 20 minutes remaining. It even seemed as if England was going to repeat their 2012 win, but All Black wing, Julian Savea managed to score his second try (18 tries in 19 tests) close to the end of the game to ensure a deserved, but battling victory to the men in black. They now boast a record of 13 in 13 for 2013.

Did you watch the game? Who did you root for and why?

Remember James Dalton?

Ex-springbok hooker, James Dalton, used to be one of South Africa's past bad-boys on the rugby field and was infamously thrown out of Rugby World Cup 1995 after being involved in a huge punch-up against Canada in Port Elizabeth. It was fittingly dubbed "The Battle of Boet Erasmus".

James recently spoke to Sports24 and responded to questions from fans regarding the current Springbok team, Heineke Meyer, and the problems in the scrums.

Dalton feels that Heineke Meyer is the right man for the job of leading us to 2015 World Cup Rugby glory in the UK. He refers to the performance record of the current Bok team under Meyer's leadership, which speaks for itself. The Sports-Man agrees fully with Dalton on this point!

Furthermore, he feels that the main reason the Boks are still trailing the All Blacks is because they do not play a full 80 minutes of quality rugby. That, according to Dalton, is where the All Blacks still have the edge.

James Dalton rates Bismarck du Plessis highly and does not think that any other hooker comes close to his stand-out abilities and work rate. He does add that, and I agree again, that Strauss is an extremely good hooker in his own right, while he is very impressed with Scarra Ntubeni from the Sromers and Western Province.

In regards to the scrums in the modern game, James adds that it is clear that selecting the biggest pack of forwards and opting for the old fashioned dominating tight-head are no longer as important. Teams are preferring forwards with more skills and ball carrying abilities, compared to how it was when he played. He feels that most of the problems are actually coming in the form of the referees who are exceedingly inconsistent when it comes to scrum-time. Last weekends performance by referee Alain Rolland got some flack from Dalton, as it has from most Wales and Bok supporters.

What are your best / worst memories of James Dalton? Share them with us and give your personal views on his above responses?

Let us FORGET the Cricket for now and concentrate on Super Rugby Action...!

It saddens us all to see our beloved National Cricket team going out of the WC tournament in such a manner, but the sporting world goes on and there are loads of other sport to concentrate on right now, if you are a South African supporter...!

Bafana-Bafana beat Egypt on Saturday in the dying minutes of the game and what a win for our National Soccer team - WELL DONE!!

The Super 15 action is heating up and what a great week-end of action we had...Stormers doing us proud down here in the Cape by stacking up the points against the Force from 'Down Under'.

And what an exhausting game it was to watch on Sunday, between the Sharks and the Crusaders. I do not think the historic Twickenham has seen this kind of rugby-action in a very long time. This game was a great exhibition for Rugby and Super Rugby...!!

Let us Review the Clash of SA's two Top Super Rugby Teams:  SHARKS vs STORMERS

Sharks are the 'pace-setters'

Johannesburg - The DHL Stormers appear determined to go to Durban for their Vodacom Super Rugby derby against the Sharks on Saturday as under-dogs, with coach Allister Coetzee saying that the hosts have been the pace-setters in South African rugby since last August.
The Stormers currently top the South African conference, five log points ahead of the Sharks. Four of those points are made up of the bye that the Stormers have had and the Sharks have yet to have, which distorts the view a little bit.

But whichever way you look at it, the Sharks, after going down to the Chiefs and then the Crusaders, now have two more losses on their record than the Stormers have. That means that while the Stormers will be only too aware that the two Sharks defeats have come during an overseas tour, something that still lies in their future, the Sharks will be desperate at Kings Park.
