Van der Merwe led the Lions in last year's Currie Cup and was favourite to continue in the role in the inaugural Super 15.
Centre Doppies la Grange has been named as vice-captain.
Good luck to the Lions for this year's Super 15 Tournament. I, for one, have been very critical of them over the last few seasons, but I have always been positive that they will be back to their best and that they will play the quality rugby they did in the 1990's.
Any Lions supporters have something to add? What do you guys think of the money being spent in Johannesburg? I see that they have also signed No 8, Dries van Schalkwyk from the Blue Bulls and Boland for the coming season. Good signing you think?
