Australia Take a 2-0 Lead In Ashes 2013/2014 Series Down Under

ASHES 2013/2014 In Australia
2nd Test - Adelaide Oval
England fight to delay inevitable defeat

England did show some fight in their second innings, with Joe Root, Kevin Pietersen, and Matt Prior making the most notable contributions, but they could not avoid the inevitable loss to a clearly more determined Australian side. You have to say that from ball one on the first day of the first Ashes test at the Gabba, the Aussies seemed to be more focused on what they wanted to achieve. And they achieved what they came out to achieve that is for sure.

This was first time ever that England lost two consecutive tests by a margin of more than 200 runs. They lost this, the second test by 218 runs. Where to from here for the Poms? Can they pull one back in the 3rd test at a venue (WACA, Perth) where they last won in 1978? What do you think are their chances, or are they looking at a 5-0 whitewash?

BBC TMS tweets: 'This is only the second time in test history that England have lost successive tests by a margin of over 200 runs.'

Brydon Coverdale tweets: 'Johnson wins a Man of the Match award every 7.5 Tests. That's the best ratio of any Australian to have won more than 2 MoMs.'
Fred Flintoff tweets: 'Not the best Aussie team ever but a hungry one ! Credit to them and @darren_lehmann what a difference a few months make' #menvboys

Brian Lara tweets: '@BrettLee_58: 'Eng need to learn how 2 bat time, don't like d batting order. Cook, Carberry n Root no one to give that impetus needed.'

Piers Morgan tweets: 'Congratulations Australia, you want it more than us. Great, hard, determined team cricket. Impressive.'

Michael Vaughan tweets: 'Talk about players but @darren_lehmann is the man who has has made the most difference to this Aussie team.'

Derek Pringle tweets: 'England travel to Perth 2-0 down needing to win at the WACA Mitchell Johnson's favourite ground. It's going to take something very special.'

Tom Moody tweets: 'Congrats @CricketAus convincing dominant performance again bring on Perth.'

Glenn McGrath tweets: 'Another great win by the Aussies.......here comes 5-0!!!!'

Michael Vaughan, ex-England skipper on air, had this to say as soon as the game ended: 'Looking at the way England are playing, I don't see any other result than 5 zip. Unless things change drastically, we are in for a whitewash as England seem to be frazzled mentally.'

With a lead of 398, Australia's job was to set England an unreachable target and they set the visitors 531 with Davey Warney making an unbeaten 83. England knew they had a massive task as Clarke declared 10 minutes before start of play on day 4. Things got worse when Cook top-edged a hook in the 2nd over and though they batted well, taking the game into the fifth day, it was only about delaying the inevitable. The game ended just inside an hour on the final day leaving a lot of questions to be asked about the English side.
